THE CITY OF ANGELS is a photography triptych that honors the rough edges and honest beauty of Los Angeles, California. While walking in Downtown Los Angeles, I (Eric Kim) met multi-faceted strangers and sought to create portraits imbued with emotion, soul, and mystery. I hope that these images remind others of the beauty of fleeting encounters and the serendipity of life. I made these photographs from 2011 to 2016 in Downtown Los Angeles. The City of Angels Art Portfolio is a collaboration between me (Eric) and Cindy, whose background in hand printing and history of the book brought the project into fruition. Each art portfolio is unique, made of organic materials, and responsive to touch. The portfolio may be viewed as a tri-fold book or displayed on the wall from its button-string closure. We wanted to push the boundaries on what is considered 'conventional' wisdom for photo prints and art. In order to produce a 'haptic' and unique print, we used laser printing on textured paper because it would produce slightly different results for each print. For monochromatic prints, laser printing adds to the irregular, rough, and individualized feel that we wanted to convey in the images. For the cover, Cindy hand sketched Eric's photograph of Los Angeles, carved it into a linoleum block, and hand printed it using archival oil-based ink. This resulted in a slightly raised, irregular, and unique texture on the cover of the portfolio. For more information, see the Eric Kim Photography blog.
The Almighty with Prophets and Sybils (Detail) by Perugino, Italian-Made Fresco Reproduction on Plaster, 6 inches x 7 ¾ inches x 3/8 inches
Pietro Perugino's The Almighty with Prophets and Sybils was completed 1500. The original fresco is located at the Collegio di Cambio, in Perugia (Umbria), Italy. It is an extraordinary example of high Renaissance painting. Our reproduction portrays a detail of the original. Our fresco reproductions are done while the mortar is still wet so that the pigments, drying with the mortar, become permanently incorporated in it. PHOTOS: Opera singer Pavarotti with one of our fresco reproductions; Pope Benedict receiving a fresco reproduction from our director; reproduction of a large fresco we reproduced commissioned by the city of San Francisco; the type and thickness of the plaster we use for our reproductions; metal stand included in each box; back; hook. All frescoes have a wall hook on the back. This fresco also comes in a smaller size (4 1/4" x 5 1/2" x 3/8 inches) and is listed separately. OUR TECHNIQUE: We reproduce paintings by means of the pictography technique. This method enables us to make reproductions with the same characteristics as a painting. We are located near Perugia (Italy), in Umbria, in the Upper Tiber Valley. Years of research and experimentation in the field of painting and restoration have enable us to return with great precision to the materials and methods used by the masters of the Renaissance to make reproductions on plaster. For these fresco type reproductions we use the same type of mortar mix which Giotto used for his mural paintings. This is a mortar free of salts and alkalis which would contribute to deterioration and corrosion over time. Each reproduction is done individually with the final touches made by expert painters who are all Italian art academy graduates. Every reproduction is accompanied by a certificate attesting to the originality of the materials and methods used to create it.
